Clarifying the Role of a Management Committee
Helping Committees find a balance between too much involvement in the centres operations and too little often takes up a lot of a Co-ordinators time. Committees can easily become involved in the processes of management and the day to day operations of the centre, as they assume that it what the role of a management committee is. Training from Community Child Care can help Committees to focus on the big picture rather than get caught up in the small issues of the day.
Responsibilities of a Management Committee - Governance
What does a Committee do? Training from Community Child Care can help Committees understand that Governance focuses on the organisation's big picture rather than the details of its operation. The Committee establishes the centre's purpose, strategic goals and policies within which the centre operates including how the staffs works. Neither individual members, nor the whole committee, should be participating in the day-to-day operations of the organisation. It is the role of the coordinator to manage the service.
Responsibilities of a Co-ordinator - Management
The Co-ordinator's role and primary concerns are the day to day operations of the centre, co-ordinating events and controlling resource utilisation, motivating and supervising staff and managing information systems to ensure effective operation. The Coordinator works within policy guidelines, position descriptions and relevant legislation. The Co-ordinator should be seen as the Committee's main consultant and principle influence in the centre's operations and future direction.
Legal and Ethical Considerations
Committee members are often worried that they could be held personally liable for anything that goes wrong at a centre, and this may influence the decision to join a Management Committee. Manageable Management training can help explain the legal obligations of Management Committees, ways to reduce liability and what State and Federal legislation Committees need to be aware of.
