Question: What can I do if the school is thinking of outsourcing the outside school hours care service?
Answer:
Seek to be informed. Aim to collaborate
As a coordinator, learning that your school is considering outsourcing the outside school hours care (OSHC) service brings a range
of emotions and uncertainty. It is natural in the first instance to be reactive. However, it is wise to aim for a collaborative partnership and to remain professional.
As a first step, contact Community Child Care Association – Victoria’s peak body for OSHC – to discuss the support and resources
available to you and your service during this critical time.
Then, in consultation with your OSHC sub-committee, ask to meet with your approved provider (school council, school principal)
to acknowledge and discuss their decision to explore outsourcing the service. (If you don’t have an OSHC sub-committee, go directly
to your approved provider).
Be open and honest. Share your concerns and thoughts. For example, what does this mean for you and your staff? What does it mean for the children, their families and the wider school community? Together, note the matters that have informed the decision to explore outsourcing, and identify what information can be gathered and by whom to ensure these matters are not issues that can be addressed before a final decision is made.
While the decision to outsource ultimately lies with the approved provider, doing your best to stay informed and address any issues can help tip the balance in your favour.
